PSA: Energy Exchange Programs

A couple of months ago, I joined the “energy exchange” program at 889 Yoga. I’ve received quite a few questions about my position (no I don’t teach yoga but I really hope to one day!) so I thought I’d shed some light on energy exchanges!

Many studios offer energy exchange programs for individuals looking to give back in exchange for a studio membership.

The premise of energy exchange programs is based on karma:

“the spiritual principle of cause and effect where intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect). Good intent and good deed contribute to good karma and future happiness, while bad intent and bad deed contribute to bad karma and future suffering.”

The idea is that by doing good deeds (donating your time and energy to a studio), you receive good karma (a free membership!). As a student, yoga membership prices are often financially inaccessible so this was a great way for me to practice without feeling financially strained.

So what “good deeds” am I doing?

Each program works slightly differently in the tasks you are responsible for but as an energy-exchanger at 889 Yoga, I work a 4-hour shift once a week (you can attend a class on your shift so it’s only really 3 hours of work!) that involves:

  • Spraying down and rolling mats
  • Doing laundry
  • Mopping the studios
  • Refilling the water/ tea station
  • Tiding props (blankets, blocks & bolsters)
  • Organizing items in the studio shop
  • Ensuring the studio is welcoming
  • Assisting members by responding to their questions and needs
  • Opening/ closing duties

And that’s pretty much it aside from other small tasks here and there. 889 yoga has cleaning staff to take care of the “heavier” cleaning duties but each studio is slightly different so if you are looking to do an energy exchange, make sure the studio is a good fit for you re: the energy you are comfortable giving and taking. At 889 yoga, I receive unlimited membership to attend all yoga, pilates and barre classes.

Another benefit to the program is becoming a part of the incredibly welcoming community. I love attending monthly socials and events where I can meet new people and learn from my fellow yogis. It has been a wonderful experience thus far!

If you are interested in an energy exchange at 889 yoga specifically, let me know & I’d be happy to connect you to the energy exchange coordinator or, if you have any further questions about energy exchanges, let me know! I know many studios have them, you just have to ask!

Oh, and if you are in the area (I work on Saturday afternoons!), I definitely recommend trying a class at the studio. I remember falling in love with 889 Yoga the minute I stepped through the doors!

Love Always,

-A
